ISLAND TURNING
Hand crafted wood art
Welcome to Island turning.

The story behind Island Turning
I am a wood turner and carver, dedicated to working with the wood grown on Vancouver Island. Inspired by my father who ignited my love for woodworking my journey into this interesting craft began at a very young age. As a child, I spent countless hours in my fathers workshop, learning the basics and creating small items on his lathe.
Despite my early passion for woodworking, I pursued a degree in sciences. After completing my education in South Africa, I got married and moved with my husband to Namibia. Years later we made the life changing move to Canada. It was in this new, inspiring environment that I rekindled my love for woodworking, starting with making wooden pens on a small lathe. What began as a hobby quickly turned into a full immersion into the art of pen making. However, my dreams extended beyond small creations and I started to create larger, more intricate pieces.
The thrill of finding unique pieces of wood and transforming them into works of art has always fuelled my passion.
Today, I primarily work with yellow and red cedar burls. My collection includes a wide variety of wood found on Vancouver Island. Each piece presents a new challenge and an opportunity to create something beautiful and unique.
My journey as a wood turner and carver has allowed me to blend my scientific background with my artistic spirit, creating pieces that reflect the natural beauty of Vancouver island.
